2020 is officially here. Which means you and your students are coming back from the holiday break. In some cases, there is a regression in student behavior. In other cases, new students are joining your class that don’t know the basic ground rules. This combination can make classroom management difficult, so we have come up with a list of 5 quick classroom management tips that you can take with you into the new year.
1) Re-establish the rules of the classroom
Coming back from break can be both tough on the students and the teachers. Old behaviors begin to resurface and new behaviors pop up. It is a good idea to re-establish the basic ground rules of class at the beginning of the term. It helps to give previous students a refresher as well as let the new students in on how your classroom works.
2) Set up consequences for miss behaving
If you haven’t already, set up consequences for misbehavior. It is helpful for students to know what is going to happen if they are not doing what they are supposed to in class.
3) Praise your students
When your students are behaving in the way you want them to, praise them. When students are recognized for their good behavior, it makes them feel good and encourages them to continue to act correctly. Praising your students also shows them that you are aware of what is happening in the classroom.
4) Use reminders
Students sometimes get off task and forget what they are supposed to be doing, so before disciplining them, it is a good idea to remind them to get back on task. You can also use a keyword(s) for when students are getting too loud and talkative. Something simple like using
"noise level" works well.
5) Install classroom management software
If your students are using computers in the classroom, classroom management software is a must. Software like Vision allows you to monitor your students’ devices in real-time, create web filters, send your students links, and more. Vision makes it easy to get your students back on task.
